OUR VENUE
EVSRA’s principal race venue is Lake Whitehurst, a 458 acre fresh water lake immediately adjacent to Norfolk International Airport. Regattas are conducted from a dedicated rowing area at the Norfolk Botanical Garden.
Regatta facilities include three floating docks, a permanent finish line platform and a covered shelter that serves as a regatta office and assembly area. The site has indoor restrooms and running water. Parking is provided in two satellite lots at either end of the regatta grounds.
The 1,400 meter six lane race course begins from start platforms at the northeast end of the lake and ends just short of a causeway to the southwest. Please alert your crews that run out space is limited at the end of the race course so they must check down smartly after crossing the finish line.
Currently the course is unbouyed, but lanes are prominently marked with large signs erected on the causeway beyond the finish line. There is a breakage bouy at the 100 meter mark.
We provide each crew with an assigned assembly area convenient to launch and recovery docks at the southwestern end of the race course. Boats may be delivered to assigned areas between 4 PM to 8 PM on the evening prior to regattas, and commencing at 6 AM on the morning of regattas. Motor access to the regatta grounds is limited to one tow vehicle per team.
First call for launching is thirty minutes prior to the scheduled race time. Crews should proceed up the right hand side of the course to a marshaling area to the east of the start platforms. Instruct your crews to stay within hailing distance of the start marshal who patrols this area by boat.
The mid point of the course has limited visibility for boats proceeding to the starting area. Outbound crews must stay on the shore side of the red marker bouys, follow the instructions of the mid course marshal, and watch for races coming down the course.
